Waiting....It will commence shortly.....

Looks like there hadn’t been any updates here for the past 5 days or so. Well basically because I am at home now, and without a 24/7 internet connection, I wouldn’t be able to connect here regularly to make my regular updates. Nonetheless, here I am , wanting to share of my journey and my experiences for the past weekend.

With just exactly 12 hours to go (from the time of posting) before I actually start my long awaited Internship in Pilot Multimedia (M) SDN BHD, I am currently anxiously waiting for it to begin. Not that I’ve not worked before, but this time, it will be different. Instead of taking after the cashier counter, I would most probably be in front of a computer, keying in data. Instead of standing around waiting for customer to buy stuffs, I would most probably be sited in an air-conditioned building. Instead of meeting customers face to face, I most probably be handling office work. Above are just some of the usual office routines that most office workers will concur. I don’t know what I will be assigned to; neither do I know my job scope. But as every working people will tell me, “Be enthusiastic, put on a smile, and try your best”. I would agree 100% on that. Being in a family where both my parents are working, I learnt a lot from them. Like what Mr Leng, my J2EE course trainer said, “Knowledge is transferable, but skills are not”, really hold true. I’ve heard many advices from literally everywhere, from my parents’ right up to my friends. I can listen to everybody, but until I really try doing it myself, I would never get hold of it.

I rarely type something as deep as this, but I’m nervous and at the same time, excited for this will be my first step venturing into what may seem to be “the stepping stone” to gauge my competency and also my knowledge on what I’ve been learning thus far. This internship program also will be an eye opener for me to see first hand, the progress and the competency of fellow workers in their respective fields, in my case, the Information Technology (IT) era.

Hmmm, I can’t wait, I can’t wait.
I can’t wait, for it to begin
Though it may seem simple and easy
But then hey, I’m just a trainee J

MDC USP Training - Day 9(Final)

At last, after 9 days of attending intensive J2EE course, it is finally over. I’m not sure to be happy or not, but definitely I sense relieve in my heart, and at the same time, satisfaction. Relieved that I can finally take this “burden” of going to campus during the holidays for this course, and satisfied because I now know something about J2EE and it’s functionality, how it works etc…etc…

The overall structure of the course was good, although they were some negative feedbacks about the course as well as the trainer. Personally I felt lucky for being among the first batch of MMU students to undergo this training. This pilot project was fully sponsored by MDC, which objective was to make us students competent enough to enter the work market. Dr Yew (I’m unsure of the surname, but that’s what he introduced himself), one of the MDC’s personnel came and deliver his message to us while we were in the lab, and he said that the aim of MDC and this project was to equipped us with the right tools and the in-depth knowledge of the required course to be able to stand out among foreign workers. According to Dr Yew, the industry out there were willing to hired more highly trained and skilled workers from India because of their competency in the field whereas we as Malaysian doesn’t seemed to portray this appearance while we were still studying. I am grateful to MDC for investing in us, the leaders of tomorrow (cheh wah) in terms of course training and also leadership training.

We had a post-J2EE test before we call it a day at 5.07PM, and the questions were similar, if not the same as the actual certification paper. It was challenging, and it covers the entire 9 days course syllabus. Besides that, we also did our very first project using the tools provided under J2EE. We incorporated servlets, JSP, HTML……to come up with a system, and the most challenging part was making it up to 3 tiers, which means that the server sits on one computer, the database server sits on another computer, and the client machine , as you all might have guessed, on another computer. It churned out the knowledge that we had acquired these 9 days, and surprisingly to Mr Leng, my instructor, all 5 groups presented up to 3 tiers, where as the previous 2 batches that he had trained, out of 10 groups only 2 groups managed it. It was an achievement for us trainees, as well as for the trainer, who did his part in mentoring and teaching us the skills needed to deploy a program. Kudos to you, Mr Leng

So this post wrapped up the entire 9 days J2EE certification training course. Before I end, I would like to convey a message of gratitude and thanks to MDC for sponsoring this course, under a pilot project for MMU students, and the skill trainer provided by Info Trek Sdn Bhd, as well as the trainer himself, Mr Leng Chee Kong. Thank You.

My Thoughts, my Ramblings...

Ahhh, with the MDC USP training entering its 6th day, I couldn’t help wondering to myself, what have I learnt? J2EE is supposed to be a professional certification course, and here am I, knowing nuts about the course, and all we were told to do is a mini project demonstrating the use of servlet, JSP, and those in the same category. In 2 weeks, are we supposed to know everything about the course? I mean, true enough, some may say that they are quite comfortable with the course structure, but I think otherwise. The timeframe is too short, and to cram up everything about the knowledge of servers and application which is totally new in two weeks, man…..I am not a robot, nor am I a super genius.

Some of you may say after reading this “If you find it hard, why do you take this course? ” Well, this happened out of miscommunication between 2 parties, which I am not going into details, but all in all, this is a new course, and I am determine to get the best out of it. Though I didn’t pay a single cent to enter this course, nor do I have to pay for the books, but hey, free courses like this don’t come every time, and somehow, I just feel that I just have to learn whatever that is being taught, and to practice upon it.

On a lighter note, my industrial training is near, in 7 days time. I am anxious and nervous about it even now. What am I going to say? What am I to expect? What my job requires me to do?.....all this and many more questions are popping in and out of my mind now. This is the first time I am going out to the working world, (my work after Form 5 doesn’t count), and I just got to pray and hope for the best. I’ve heard many friends, and even relatives saying to me, that what I am going to experience in the working world is totally different that where I am now. Though it is just going to be 4 months, but I am saying it as if I am going to work forever. *snap* Oh, I still have my final year project, and 5-6 more subjects to accomplish before I graduate and begin my ACTUAL working life.

For all this years I’ve learnt
The ways of life from You
How I seek and yearn
To live life more with You

Thank you Lord for this life
And for my family and friends as well
Thank you Lord for making me wise
To know the ways of truth and joy

Star Wars 3 - Revenge of The Sith

A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.......

Yesterday was the premier to the Star Wars series, which is Episode 3, Revenge of The Sith , and it marks the final episode of the 6 episodes series. With more then 30 years on screen, Star Wars is the Best movies series of all times. And it’s creator, Mr George Lucas is definitely the best producer I’ve ever heard of. Kudos to you.

I went for the episode 3 screening of the movie yesterday, and the place is, as usual packed to the core. Throngs of star wars fan crowds the entrance until there’s barely enough space to move about. The cinema in Summit is big (can’t compare with the ones in Midvalley though). I spotted a few aspiring jedi’s in their respective Jedi costumes and I have a chance to snap a photo with them. The show starts at 2130 hours, and I was literally glued to the seat for the next 2.5 hours, munching on pop-corns and sipping on coke. The cinematics wers super good, the sound system was superb( I was in the THX cinema), the story line was exceptional, the effects were awesome, the fellowship of the people were intense….I’ve had nothing to say but all praise for the movie, which speaks of Anakin Skywalker becoming evil and turned to the dark side, forsaking his master, his mentor, his wife, his everything…...

For more information, please visit the Jedi’s blog -> ‘Anakin’ and ‘ObiWan’ and ‘Darth Vader

May the force be with you...*sound of Darth Vader's breath*

MDC USP Trainning - Day 1

The Multimedia Development Centre Undergraduate Skill Programme (MDC USP) training is a certification course sponsored by MDC, and covers two major software in the market now, which is Microsoft .NET (MS.NET) and also Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE). The participants for this course must be having their industrial training next semester, as this was one of the requirements to qualify for this training. I went and register myself for the J2EE course, and the ironic thing is I don’t know anything about this topic. I’ve heard of J2ME, J2EE, J2SE....., but just that I am totally in lost about what each has to offer. The training will be held for 2 weeks prior to industrial training, with about 40-50 students for both courses. The training company that I was to be in is called Info Trek, and it is situated at Amcorp Tower near Taman Jaya..

When I first stepped into the company, I expect myself to be using high-end computers, as I was told that the company specializes in IT Training. I thought there would be electric door where the staff uses smart card access. But then what I experienced is the opposite of what I expected. Hahaha…. (Disclaimer : This is just purely my own thoughts. No offence). The training centre is a small room, with rows after rows of PC joined together, about half the size of any MMU’s lab. The specification of the computer is *Hold Your breath* Pentium 3 550 MHz with 128MB Ram running windows XP with service pack 1. I was dumbfounded when I found out, and I went like….*speechless*. One of my friend said in a joking manner. “If I knew the computer was like this, I should have brought my laptop…”.

Suddenly at one corner of the room, one person complained that the computer can’t be switched on, and soon after that, several others complained too. Even the instructor's pc cannot be turned on. That is when Mr Vincent, the coordinator for this programme for Info Trek stepped in and said “Due to power failure in this company, blah blah blah……, We have to move our training place from here to one of the labs in MMU. Is that ok with you people?” The ironic part is, there were 2 group of students in that company, taking different course, but only my training center having problems with the computers and the power supply. Bummer…

What??? Oh Man…. Training back in MMU? I never thought of that “splendid” idea before. “Great”, I heard some one said “I just brought back all my stuffs to PJ”. Some said “ but I don’t’ have accommodation, hostel closed, and no transport either”… There were several disappointment faces (I being one of them), and the instructor, Mr Leng Chee Kong, said that because the 2 weeks course isn’t enough to cover all the course materials, he suggested we don’t waste much time. Arrangements were being made to ensure everybody gets back to MMU by 3PM, and the current clock shows 10.30AM. great. That’s just great. My remaining two weeks will be spend in the University, and there goes my plan to Cameron, to shopping, to…..:P

*Fast forward* At 3PM, we gathered together at MMU’s computing lab and started our official first lesson on the overall structure of the J2EE platform, and the introduction of the course. It was and eye opener , and I got to learned many new things unheard of in my life. The lecture delivered was good, and the trainner explained to us the most recent development in the field, as Mr Leng had been in the IT industry for over 15 years. He is a well qualified trainer for various computer languages, plus he also start up his own company in the IT field.

Wow….that was my first day experience being in a certification course, but unfortunately, because this course is being held for just 2 weeks, and all of us lacked the pre-requisite paper to be actually qualified for this course, which is J2SE, we cannot get the J2EE certification. Still, all 25 of us will get 2 free books (RM200++) by the end of the training, and also to attend the course itself is wholly sponsored by MDC, which easily will costs thousands if we would take it outside.

I really want to thank MDC for sponsoring me this training, and also to InfoTrek, which provides qualified trainers. Not forgetting the lecturers in charged of this training scheme in MMU, who have been so sensitive to the students need, and to ensure that we remained competent with the rest of the graduates around.

The Week that was...

After 2 week of disappearance from cyberspace, finally we have an update from Jowen. This past week had been an eventful week for me, at least I managed to do some useful stuffs

Let’s do a quick re-cap on what I did for this week. After ‘RockTified’, I went to church on Sunday, and it was more like a church reunion for me. For those who didn’t know, I have been stuck in Cyberjaya since March because of assignments and also exams, and therefore I have not been back home since then till the holidays. I sort of missed my home church, and had been attending other church service. That’s why I said that Sunday was a church reunion for me after 3 months. Before going back to church, I had this deep sense of depression and sadness inside me ( don’t ask why, coz I don’t know it myself)… I went to church feeling defeat and oppress. But somehow as the worship began, I started to feel lighter, and lighter……you know, like when one is set free from prison, that type of feeling…. I couldn’t express my joy after that, so much so after the sermon, I was completely relieved and joyous, as though nothing ever happened. I’ve never felt such joy, and I really enjoyed the companionship of all my friends and also the time spent in church

Throughout the week it was boring, except for some invitation to go out for some yum-cha session, and ended up playing DOTA till 1.30 in the morning. What happened was a group of 5 people decide to go ‘drink tea’ at a mamak stall nearby, and happily chatted away till about midnight. Then after the session, around 12midnight, somebody suggested we go for a game of DOTA. And yea, we all succumbed to the temptation and all of us played till 1.10Am in a cyber cafe somewhere in PJ. I was dead tired when I reached home, and was zonked out after that till 12,30PM the next day. AWESOME!!!.

Rocktified

What do you get when 2 bands played side by side for 1.5 hours?
aWeSoMe Music

What do you feel when Good Shepherd band and Unabashed Ardour take on stage?
Rocktified

Rocktified’ was the theme, and on the 6th of May 2005, in the Perousia hall of Glad Tidings Church, PJ, a crowd of about 80- 100 people gathered together at 8.30PM, for a solid performance by 2 very special bands, Unabashed Ardour and Good Shepherd Band. This is a project done by the students of the International College of Music (ICOM)

The night started at 2030 hours, with Brandon - the emcee for the night - welcoming all the people who attended. The hall is big, with a capacity for about 500 people (if seated to the max), equipped with fantastic lighting and sound. There were several booths outside the hall, selling things ranges from devotional bookmarks to glow-in-the-dark crosses to twisted wired frames, beautifully and skillfully done by the people of Beautiful Gate Foundation. People were seen entering the hall as early as 8PM, with me and my friend, who arrived much earlier, talking over some issues. A small reunion were seen with me and the Good Shepherd church’s youth, when all of us were sited outside the hall, waiting for the event to start

At sharp 8.30PM, we were ushered in the hall, and I took my place in the second row from the front. Brandon as the emcee, welcome us and the night began. Unabashed Ardour was the first team to perform, led by Jason Ding, together with Andrew Tan, who was one of the Malaysian Idol Season 1 top 5 finalists. They performed 4 songs, which is their own original composition that leads to claps and cheers from the floor. One brother said : “ That’s what I call original music.” Yea, all had fun listening to the music and song, with the last song being one of the band’s favorite and apparently, it is the crowd’s favorite too. It’s named “Whisper in the storm”. According to Jason, the song was composed and taken based on the psalms of David. The song had an implicit meaning to it.

After about 30-35 minutes, Brandon took on stage again, and this time it was freebies time. YEA!!! Nothing pleases Malaysian more then freebies. Up for grabs includes a Rocktified T-shirt and some key chains. The stuffs were snapped up almost instantly, and the emcee introduced the various stalls outside the hall and soon, Good Shepherd Band were called on stage.

Leading on vocals for Good Shepherd Band were Samuel, Samson and Shama (The S3). Great singers they are, and the songs they sung really portrayed their powerful vocals and sound. The band played several songs, in no particular orders ‘Jump to the jam’, ‘History maker’, ‘The great adventure’ and ‘Jesus Freak’ were some of the famous songs that were performed. The group, backed by Sanjay and Andrew on guitars, together with Ashwin on drums, delivered a powerful performance that rock the night. The music wave was great enough to start a tsunami, and as some of the comments I heard, ~Electrifying~

In between the songs, Samson tried to break the ice among the crowd by playing a game. Dubbed the “Two-Fifty” game, and as quoted by Samson “Just for tonight. The guys will cost Fifty cents, and the girls will cost Two dollars”. For example when he said three fifty, 1 girl and 3 guys will stand together to make up that amount (any other combinations are also accepted) but then he wants a group to be formed at least by one guy and one girl. So when the next round he said seventy cents, all of us were at a lost. Some of us were contemplating whether to chopped the girls hand or legs to make up the remaining 20 cents *evil laughter?* Just joking by the way =P It can’t be serious anyway J)

During the last song of the band performance, the audiences were invited to dance and to do head bang in front of the stage. It was done to the song ‘Jesus Freak’ by DC Talk. The S3 plus Brandon, together with the musician thought that the night wouldn’t end without some excitement and fun, and indeed, about half of the crowd went upfront to dance and to enjoy what seemed to be a ‘Rocktifying’ song. People were seen to be enjoying themselves to the upbeat of the drum, the electrifying sound of the guitars, and the explosive sound of the vocals.

At the end of the show, which lasted for an hour and a half, everyone was satisfied. From the little children who came with their parents, to the band members who performed; the volunteers for the night to the booth vendors, all of us were satisfied to be able to pull through without any major hiccups. Words of compliment and laughter were heard among the crowd, and truly this is a scenario of Christian music being brought to greater limits. People nowadays had been more open and expose towards Christian rock music, and the perception of Christian music being just hallelujah hymns were long gone. Music is a powerful tool for evangelism, and the organizers of the night learnt that. Rocktified 2005 certainly live up to its name, and that there will be more of this coming up, even though it is a class project.

A tribute to->

*Sheema for being the organizing crew. Thanks for the invitation, and it certainly had been an accomplishment. Great job well done.

*Unabashed Ardour and Good Shepherd Band, for the powerful and explosive performances on stage.

*Volunteers who helped out in every way. Without you people, the night would be in a mess

*All who attended the concert. The night was nothing without your support and participation. . .
